Westfield, MA: Genesis Spiritual Life and Conference Center is pleased to announce that Jennifer Schimmel has been named executive director by the Board of Trustees. Her appointment comes at an opportune time in the organization’s history, as it evolves the mission of providing a welcome and supportive community for those who seek knowledge, personal and spiritual growth.
Schimmel has over 22 years of experience in nonprofit leadership and management, including serving as executive director for the Greater Springfield Habitat for Humanity in Massachusetts from 2007 to 2019, where she led a 300% increase in special event donations, developed an in-kind donation program, established robust volunteer and internship programs, and opened an affiliate Re-Store, selling affordable reuse merchandise to the public. Following the 2011 Springfield, Massachusetts tornado, Schimmel successfully raised $600,000 to fund four homes for tornado victims. Most recently, she served as development associate for Hartford International University for Religion and Peace in Hartford, Connecticut, and as executive director of the Omega Phi Alpha Sorority and Foundation in East Lyme, Connecticut.
“On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the Genesis team, we are excited to have Jenn Schimmel join us as the new Executive Director to lead the Genesis Spiritual Life and Conference Center,” said Kevin O’Connor, board chair. “We searched over several months to find just the right person to lead Genesis and we believe Jenn is that person. She has many great qualities that are in line with the Genesis mission. Welcome Jenn!”
“It is a privilege of a lifetime to join Genesis,” Schimmel said. “Life is a journey and not a destination. It is like the river that winds through the canyons, it gently smooths out the edges, pushing along the path to create a place of beauty and an opportunity for all to be as God intended.”
A native of Western Massachusetts, Schimmel received a Master of Science in Management degree from Rensselaer Hartford in Hartford and a Bachelor of Arts in Fine and Performing Arts from Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. She is an active member and Alumni Volunteer for Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority, and a Global Village Trip Leader for Habitat for Humanity.

Sometimes, a calling begins with inner restlessness. A disquiet or tension, perhaps even an irritation. In the ups and downs of the day-to-day, it is easy to chalk these up to the ordinary trials and tribulations of daily life. Certainly, growing in maturity requires cultivating the ability to hold fast during turbulent times, not jumping ship at every inconvenience or upset.

A while ago, Genesis received the gift of a canvas labyrinth along with a number of boxes of accessories, some easels and posters. Due to its size, the labyrinth will only fit in the Providence Room and time passed as we waited for the room to be available so we could unfold the labyrinth and walk it. In the meanwhile, Nick and Wayne stored the labyrinth, boxes and posters upstairs in a Carriage House closet. Weeks passed, then months. Years.

These past weeks I’ve had occasion to cover Genesis’ kitchen so our beloved Chef Jen could have a couple of days off. I delighted in harvesting tart cherries from the tree behind the Carriage House and incorporating them into Rainbow Chard, bacon and cherry pizzas, Chilled Persian Soup, and cooking them down for a sauce over vanilla ice cream.
